Every other year, the American Art Therapy Association (AATA) sends its members a survey regarding member demographics, work status, and various other attributes. These surveys are then compiled to create a more generalized view of the current AATA membership. The surveys over the years have changed slightly to accommodate new information; however, the bulk of the survey format has remained the same. The current survey added information regarding malpractice liability insurance and personal perceptions regarding art therapy and art therapy employment. The following report provides the various results obtained from the 1996-1997 survey. The data are presented in written as well as graphic form. Approximately 5,214 surveys were mailed and 2,204 surveys were returned, resulting in a 42.3% return rate.
