The measurement of electrochromism allows to get information on the direction of optical transition moments, dipole moments of molecules in the ground state and in excited states as well as on polarizabilities in excited states. The method is compared with other procedures yielding such molecular properties. Some applications to molecular spectroscopy, chemistry, measurement of internal electric fields and light modulation are discussed.
