A macroscopic mathematical model is developed which describes the time-dependent behavior of the positive column of a weakly ionized electric discharge. This model is solved for the steady state, including the effects of Joule heating. These steady-state solutions are then perturbed and their stability with respect to the small disturbances is studied. Finally, comparisons are made to the experimental results of the stability of discharges in neon.
