Cellular aging is considered to be caused by the physiological deterioration in the homeostatic regulatory process which is essential for the proper maintenance of cellular function. Although among numerous theories of aging proposed in the past, the cellular mechanism underlying the age‐dependent deterioration is not well defined. Currently two modern hypotheses, free radical and glycation are most popular among gerontologists. This review discusses the involvement of free radicals and glycation process in aging as possible cellular mechanisms with a new proposal on their synergistic interactions through a common pathway of free radical generation by glycation process.
