Demixing / Liquid Crystals / Phase Diagrams / Smectic Phases n‐Heptyloxy‐ and n‐heptylcyanobiphenyl show induced smectic phases in mixtures with n‐alkanes, n‐alcohols, and n‐alkylbenzenes. Alkyloxycyanobiphenyls with shorter alkyl chains (hexyl and pentyl homologues) show miscibility gaps with an upper consolution temperature in mixtures with alkanes. It is obvious that demixing and induction of smectic phases are related processes and we believe, therefore, that the induction of smectic phases in these mixtures is a microscopical demixing in polar and non‐polar layers. X‐ray measurements in heptyloxycyanobiphenyl/tridecane mixtures support this idea.
