Twenty-five patients with the clinical diagnosis of esophagitis were studied by esophagoscopy, esophageal biopsy, and acid perfusion with simultaneous manometric recording from the lower esophagus. This group was compared with a control group of 25 patients who did not have esophageal symptoms. Motor activity was recorded through open-tipped catheters during perfusion for three test periods: first, saline; second, 0.1 normal hydrochloric acid; and third, saline. In all 25 patients...
