The value of resection of palpably enlarged, superficial lymph nodes for diagnostic purposes has been recognized for decades. In 1949, this concept was broadened by Daniels' demonstration (1) that biopsy of nonpalpable scalene lymph nodes would provide a pathological diagnosis in a significant percentage of cases of indeterminate intrathoracic and intra-abdominal disease. Subsequently, it has been recognized that scalene node biopsy has prognostic as well as diagnostic value in patients...References1.
