Raman scattering has been used to study the pressure dependence of lattice modes in Zr up to 16 GPa. Softening of the zone-center transverse optical mode of {α}-Zr is observed with increasing pressure. An additional mode, observed above 8 GPa in the upstroke run and in the unloading cycle, is assigned to {ω}-Zr.
