We have investigated the characteristic-energy-loss spectra from thin crystals of neon, argon, krypton, and xenon using low-energy electrons for excitation. Features have been observed that correspond to both excitonic and interband transitions. These data are compared with data from optical measurements and high-energy-electron scattering experiments.
