Deuteron inelastic scattering and inelastic breakup calculations are formulated in the framework of a simple three-body description, by using an adiabatic approximation. Application is then made for 80 MeV deuterons, exciting the first 2⁺ state in ⁵⁸Ni. Similarities and differences between the elastic and inelastic breakup processes are discussed. Comparison with the predictions of the folding model is also made.NUCLEAR REACTIONS Deuteron, elastic scattering, inelastic scattering, elastic breakup, inelastic breakup, three-body model, adiabatic approximation, proton-neutron coincidence, folding model, ⁵⁸Ni.
