Technical report demonstrates browser-based Android app development for field data collection, suggesting lowered technical barriers for scientific researchers.
Researchers often need to collect data. Often, data collection applications are deployed on mobile phones and tablets as they are easy to transport, have many sensors and can integrate with other sensors and can combine both the data acquisition and data entry processes. Developing mobile phone applications can be challenging and LambdaNative is a free and open source framework that makes this easier. This talk describes the creation of Carpentries tutorial materials that enable one to create Android data collection applications. It is possible to start from a template application and modify it using continuous integration tools on GitHub, GitLab or Sourcehut - this lowers the barrier to development as only a web browser and internet access are required to create a data collection application.
