Estimates of the spin-orbit coupling parameter ζ 4p in Cu III are made from an analysis of the energies of the multiplets derived from the 3d 8 ( 1 G)4p configuration which were tabulated by Moore in 1952. The lowest term, z 4 D 0 , in the configuration is also examined and the value for ζ4p is concluded to be 925 ±40 cm -1
