The Compton profile of polycrystalline titanium has been measured using 59.54-keV γ rays from a ²⁴¹Am source. The resulting Compton profile is significantly different from Weiss's previous measurements obtained form MoKα and AgKα radiation. Our experimental results have been interpreted by means of a renormalized-free-atom model. Good agreement between measured and computed quantities is found if the electronic configuration is chosen as 3d³4s¹ (in atomic notations), which is to be compared with the atomic configuration 3d²4s².
