The Mammalia have evolved a remarkable diversity both of reproductive strategies and of the neuroendocrine systems that control them. The nature and extent of these variations have only recently come to light, and we expect that their continued study will facilitate the formulation of unifying concepts applicable to all vertebrates. Here we review recent studies of the control of ovarian function in the rhesus monkey that have relevance to human reproduction.
