The effect of impurity scattering on plasmon-assisted optical absorption in semiconductors is studied using Green's-function techniques. The interaction HeE of the electrons with the electric field of the photon, the interaction Hₑₚ of electrons and plasmons, and the change HepE in Hₑₚ caused by the electric field are all considered. For momentum-conserving final states the amplitudes for processes linear in the electric field E exactly cancel just as they do in the absence of collisions. For final states that are not momentum conserving, this cancellation no longer occurs, and a finite absorption is obtained.
