In this volume, Dr. Pennington has collected a vast amount of material on proctology. His introductory chapter is historical, and he has preceded each following chapter by a brief historical review of that particular aspect of the subject. The book aims at the practical, special emphasis being placed on the instruments and methods used. It is freely interspersed with case reports from the author's practice, and with numerous illustrations, the large majority of the latter borrowed from other publications. The style of writing is colloquial. It appears to have been the attempt to include everything, rather than to select carefully from the large amount of material available, simply those methods which the author could thoroughly recommend.
