A study is made of the behaviour of field‐emission current‐voltage characteristics in 3.5 Ωcm p‐type Ge emitters, cleaned by field desorption. Nonlinearity of the Fowler‐Nordheim plots, and a contracting field‐emission pattern in the region of slow emission current increase are observed. The dependence of the nonlinear effects on the shape of the emitter and the temperature treatment is studied. The behaviour of the current‐voltage characteristics is also studied for the case where barium and gold films are deposited on the emitter. It is found that coating a field‐emitter with a metallic layer of thickness less than 0.1 monolayers results in the complete removal of the nonlinear effects. A qualitative explanation of these results is given based on the concept of “exhausting” the inversion region near the emitting surface when the emission current is removed.
