The change in refractive index and thickness of the leached film on a high barium‐silicate glass in 3 N HCL has been studied as a function of etching time and temperature. The thickness change follows the form αt – βt 2 where t represents the time of leaching. The refractive index decreases for a time and then increases with thickness increase. Some evidence is found that indicates the stain layer forms by a region of low refractive index moving into the glass.
