A rapid, sensitive, and convenient thin-layer chromatographic method was developed for the detection of phenolic compounds—particularly catechol (1,2-dihydroxybenzene) in cigarette smoke. Micro-polyamide plates are used with a benzene, methanol, and acetic acid mixture (45:8:4) as developing solvent and diazotized benzidine as a spray reagent to produce vivid, characteristically colored spots. Data on Rf values and colors for some phenolics in cigarette smoke condensate are given.
