The modified negative mass instability of a plasma in a short mirror magnetic bottle is shown to be strongly affected if one takes into account a finite bounce frequency. The unstable range of density depends on the pitch angle spreading of the distribution. The case of a large dispersion of the average ion cyclotron frequency is also investigated and it is found that a rather dilute plasma remains unstable.
