Key result
Following uncomplicated Group A streptococcal pharyngitis, 63% of patients demonstrated a significant increase in serum antistreptococcal diphosphopyridine nucleotidase activity (ASDA) during convalescence.
Why the study?
Does serum antistreptococcal diphosphopyridine nucleotidase (ASDA) activity behave as a specific streptococcal antibody and reflect antecedent streptococcal infection similarly to ASO, AH, and ASK?
Observational (n=136)
Does serum antistreptococcal diphosphopyridine nucleotidase (ASDA) activity behave as a specific streptococcal antibody and reflect antecedent streptococcal infection similarly to ASO, AH, and ASK?
ASDA behaves as a specific streptococcal antibody, with its titers increasing following streptococcal infection and in acute rheumatic fever, similarly to ASO, AH, and ASK.

Supports ASDA as streptococcal antibody marker; leaves open incremental diagnostic value over ASO/AH/ASK.
One of the recently described extracellular prod- ucts of Group A streptococci is diphosphopyridine nucleotidase (DPNase) (1). This enzyme has received attention as a substance of possible im- portance in the etiology of either rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis because a) it was isolated from cardiotoxic fractions of supernates of broth cultures of Group A streptococci (2, 3) and b) al- most all nephritogenic strains of Group A strepto- cocci studied produced it in vitro (4).

Bernhard et al. (1959) conducted an observational in Streptococcal pharyngitis and rheumatic fever (n=136). Group A streptococcal infection vs. Acute phase vs convalescent phase was evaluated on Significant increase in antistreptococcal diphosphopyridine nucleotidase activity (ASDA) titer during convalescence. Following uncomplicated Group A streptococcal pharyngitis, 63% of patients demonstrated a significant increase in serum antistreptococcal diphosphopyridine nucleotidase activity (ASDA) during convalescence.
