A controlled molecular motion takes place in the covalently linked two-component system 1: the NiII-to-NiIII oxidation process facilitates the translocation of an X− ion (Cl−, NCO−) from CuII to the nickel centre, whereas on reduction of NiII the X− ion moves back to CuII. The intramolecular translocation prevails over any other intermolecular anion transfer, as a result of an entropy effect.
