X irradiation of tbe chick embryo or of the eye of the young hen does not lead to lens opacity. The immediate radiation damage to the bird lens appears from histological studies to be the same as it is in the mammalian lens, but it is suggested that the damaged cells are lysed from the bird lens whereas they remain in perpetuity in the lens of the mammal.
