A theory of Vk centres in simple cubic Cs‐halides in the spirit of Sewell's treatment of the small polaron is presented. The stability of a hole trapped on a single site and that of the Vk centre are compared. Expressions for the peak position and width at half maximum of the uv (2Σ → 2Σ ) absorption band are derived. The results are in satisfactory agreement with experiment and show that the interaction of the hole with the acoustic modes of the lattice vibrations becomes comparable to the one with the optical modes, as the mass of the halide increases.
