Concentrated aqueous solutions of ZnCl2 have been studied by the anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS) technique at the Zn K-absorption edge. The hydration number around Zn2+ was found to be 5.7 at a distance of 0.210 nm in the 0.98 kmol m-3 ZnCl2 aqueous solution. On the other hand, in the 2.85 kmol m-3 ZnCl2 aqueous solution the hydration number becomes 6.2 with a distance of 0.215 nm. The present study has demonstrated the capability of the AXS technique for structural study of aqueous solutions containing heavy metallic ions.
