The matrix method which has been employed in the theory of ferromagnetism is potentially very useful in treating statistical problems concerning linear macromolecules with repeating units. The method is reviewed briefly and applied to seven illustrative problems (two of which are not worked out completely). Six of these involve ion binding or titration curves of polyelectrolytes and one has to do with the question of imperfections (missing hydrogen bonds) in the α‐helix.
