Abstract 3-Substituted 2-oxo crown ethers and a novel dioxo crown ether with a point symmetry were synthesized by the cyclization of the corresponding substituted oligoethylene glycol monocarboxymethyl ethers using benzenesulfonyl chloride in the presence of alkali metal carbonates. The reaction mechanism was discussed. Their stability constants toward sodium and potassium cations were determined and the relation between their structures and complexing properties was discussed.
