Key result
Statin therapy in patients with cardiovascular disease was associated with a lower mean platelet volume (5.37 fL vs 7.65 fL) and decreased expression of platelet activation markers CD62P and CD63.
Why the study?
Statin effects extend beyond lipid lowering to cardiac disease, platelet dysregulation, and thrombocytopenia, prompting evaluation of statin role on marker efficiency in cardiovascular disease patients.
Does statin therapy reduce mean platelet volume and platelet activation markers in patients with cardiovascular diseases?

Does statin therapy reduce mean platelet volume and platelet activation markers in patients with cardiovascular diseases?
Absolute Event Rate: 5.37% vs 7.65%
Statin therapy is associated with decreased mean platelet volume and reduced expression of platelet activation markers in patients with cardiovascular disease, suggesting additional pleiotropic antithrombotic effects.
Should not change practice yet; hypothesis-generating for pleiotropic antithrombotic effects in cardiovascular disease.
The statins are the excellent therapy for decreasing the lipid and described in about all patients with cardiovascular diseases. It has a strong role in decreasing the morbidity and mortality present with cardiovascular diseases. In recent study, it has been conducted that its major effects is far more than lowering the lipid but also it has a great role in cardiac diseases as the thrombocytopenia and platelet dysregulation also associated in decreasing the cardiac disease effects. This study explained the statin role on the efficiency of the markers and its effect in patients with cardiovascular disease. The platelet counts were examined by the flow cytometer, the samples of blood were collected from patients before and after treatment. The results showed the express of CD62P and CD63 were decrease in patients had the therapy compared to the patients without it. The study concluded that the statin therapy decrease the mean of platelet volume (MPV) in the patients suffer from this diseases.

Alaa A. Abdulrazzaq (2025) conducted an observational in Cardiovascular diseases (n=120). Statin therapy vs. No statin therapy was evaluated on Mean platelet volume (MPV). Statin therapy in patients with cardiovascular disease was associated with a lower mean platelet volume (5.37 fL vs 7.65 fL) and decreased expression of platelet activation markers CD62P and CD63.
