The polymerization of cyclobutene in the presence of catalytic systems, prepared from transition metal compounds of the 3rd to the 8th group of the periodic table and organometallic compounds, is studied. The stereospecific polymerization to crystalline polymers having polycyclobutylene structure occurs preferably with vanadium or chromium—based catalysts. The chemical and physico‐chemical structure determination and the analogies with the polymerizations of α‐olefins and butadiene allow to make probable, for the two types of polycyclobutylenes, an erythro di‐isotactic and respectively erythro di‐syndiotactic structure.
