The interaction of the redox-active clusters [Bu4N]3[Nb6Cl12X6] (X = Cl, Br, or I) with gold and silver surfaces were studied with XPS, cyclic voltammetry, and quartz crystal microgravimetry. The extent of the cluster−surface interaction ranges from etching of the metal surface, when X = I, to formation of cluster monolayers. Nonideal redox properties of the surface confined clusters are attributed to a countercation film shielding the clusters from the electrolyte.
