The mean-square optical anisotropy 〈γ2〉=32 trace 〈 ∩α∩α 〉, where ∩α is the anisotropic part of the optical polarizability tensor and 〈 〉 denotes the average over all configurations of the chain molecule, is treated according to the revised matrix multiplication method. Simplifications appropriate for symmetric chains permit condensation of the generator matrix to 14 × 14 order in the case of a threefold rotational potential.
