The stereocontrolled construction of analogues of the glycoside and orthoester regions of everninomicin 13, 384-1 (1) has been achieved in solution by a general method involving a 1,2-selenium migration. The use of a polystyrene-based selenium resin has enabled the carbohydrate orthoesters to be synthesized in an efficient and traceless manner.
