By means of both the variational method and the pocket-state formalism the energy levels of three coupled methyl or ammine groups are calculated for a wide range of potential parameters. In particular the case of a small one-particle potential is investigated where the energy spectrum is governed by the E a -E b splitting. The effects of different symmetries of the Hamiltonian on the spectrum are studied.
