The change in saturation magnetization of small particles of cobalt upon adsorption of hydrogen has been measured. It has been found that the average hydrogen atom chemisorbed decreases the magnetization by about 0.5 Bohr magnetons. This result, together with previous results on the effect of hydrogen chemisorbed on nickel, suggests the existence of surface states associated with the adsorbed atoms and the surface metal atoms. Simultaneous measurement of the magnetization of cobalt and adsorption of hydrogen in a low-field ac permeameter have shown that hydrogen chemisorbs on, and changes the magnetization of, cobalt at temperatures up to 500°C.
