The gelation level attained in an unplasticized PVC pressure pipe determines the balance in the basic physical properties of strength, stiffness and ductility. In turn, the gelation level attained is dependent upon the processing conditions. Measurement of the gelation level can be used to control both the process and the pipe quality. It is a vital parameter for the development of the extrusion process for pressure pipe with the required long term strength and for the control of the pipe quality during production. Maintenance of the correct level of gelation can ensure a pipe quality well above the specification requirements thus giving an extra margin of safety in addition to the official safety factor.
