Extracts of rose stems have an inhibitory effect on rose bud breaking and on the elongation of wheat coleoptiles. The inhibitory activity of stem extracts is proportional to the amount of extracted tissue and is partially antagonized by auxin. Boiling the extract destroys this activity only partially. The level of ABA is higher in the basal part of the stem than in the upper part. After pruning there was a reduction in ABA level in the stem part close to both sprouting and nonsprouting buds. The ABA accumulated in subtending leaves of nonsprouting buds.
