The evidence for conflicting theories of meiosis in Drosophila is reviewed, with a historical account showing the development of different points of view. The results from genetic experiments on chromosome size, meiotic mutants, the interactions of exchange and nonexchange chromosomes, and influence of the Y chromosome are evaluated with respect to the chromocentral and the “distributive pairing” hypotheses. The genetic evidence and the cytological observations favor the chromocentral hypothesis.
