The extraction of halo-complexes by tertiary amines is complicated and a consistent description of the distribution equilibrium is lacking at present. In this report, Fe(III) complexes produced in the extraction by tri-n-octylamine in benzene are elucidated with the help of the reduced form of the distribution equilibrium over a wide range of Fe(III) loading to amine ratios. The apparent Fe(III) species are (R3NHCl)4FeCl3H2O, (R3NHCl)4(FeCl3)2, (R3NHCl)4(FeCl3)3 and (R3NHCl)4(FeCl3)4. The formation constants of these species are determined.
