Trimethylaluminum reacts with [CPh 3 ][B(C 6 F 5 ) 4 ] at elevated temperatures to give a mixture of AlMe 3-x (C 6 F 5 ) x compounds, depending on the Al/B ratio. AlBu i 3 reacts significantly faster under β-hydride abstraction. The Al−C 6 F 5 species rapidly react with Cp 2 ZrMe 2 or [Cp 2 ZrMe] + under C 6 F 5 transfer to give poorly active Cp 2 ZrMe(C 6 F 5 ); this reaction may have implications for the deactivation of Cp 2 ZrMe 2 /AlR 3 /[CPh 3 ][B(C 6 F 5 ) 4 ] olefin polymerization catalysts.
