"Made in the U.S.A." promotions have had little influence on the purchase decisions of most Americans. The failure of such promotions is especially evident within the domestic automobile industry. The possibility that the lack of success of such promotional campaigns is due in part to negative stereotyping of domestically-produced cars by domestic consumers is tested using a national sample. The proposition is supported and promotional strategy recommendations which may partially ameliorate these negative in-country stereotypes are derived.
