Using transmission electron microscopy, the process of cell wall development following cytokinesis is described. Three distinct components appear to be localized in the wall and these are discussed in relation to previous work. In older cells the walls are stratified and the origin of the layers is described. The outer layers of wall are continually being shed and it is suggested that this process prevents epiphytes persisting on this species of alga.
