The direction of the spontaneous polarization of a thin ferroelectric liquid crystalline film can be switched up and down between two stable states by applying an electric field. This process is investigated theoretically using the elastic continuum theory of liquid crystals. There are found two reorientation mechanisms with different switching rates. The regimes of fast bulk switching and relatively slow domain wall motion are separated by a critical threshold field.
