Some of the factors in the spinning of viscose rayon yarns that influence filament structure have been investigated. Viscose composition, salt figure, spinning-bath temperature, and spinning-bath composition were varied ; modifier (cyclohexylamine) was added to both viscose and spinning-bath in some of the experiments. The effect of these factors on the structure of viscose filaments was assessed by measurements of skin/core structure, crystallite length, moisture-sorption ratio, anisotropic-diffusion value, water retention, and tensile properties. It is shown that ordinary viscose filaments (spun without modifier) have properties that can be correlated with amount of skin structure, but the properties of filaments spun with modifier place them in a different group from ordinary viscose filaments.
