The average field enhancement factors in each phase of two-component composites are shown to be simple functions of measurable quantities. From these results, rigorous upper bounds on enhancement factors are calculated and the microstructures for which they occur are identified. The estimation of field inhomogeneities from incomplete data is also discussed.
