Bottom sediments collected on traverses across the Peru-Chile trench consist of fine muds on the seaward side; thin seams of silty sand are interlayered with the muds in the axial zone, and on theshoreward side silty and sandy material is abundant. Quartz, plagioclase, calcite, and illite, kaolinite, chlorite, and mixed-layer clays are among the most common minerals. Volcanic glass, devitrified to a varying extent, is an important constituent of many of the core samples.
