After a critical review of the various theoretical models used for handling the problem of scattering by randomly rough surfaces, we give a description of our approach to this problem. This approach is characterized by the use of a ‘beam simulation method’ which allows us to deal with actual non-periodic and infinite rough surfaces illuminated with arbitrarily wide light beams. A comparison of our numerical results with experimental data and with other theories is given. A brief numerical investigation of some phenomena such as absorption, enhanced backscattering and the Brewster effect by randomly rough surfaces has been carried out. Finally we give a brief description of our new theory of scattering by two-dimensional random rough surfaces and the first numerical results.
