Data are presented for a number of orbital passes of the OV1-10 (1966-111B) satellite, from which H Ly α auroras were observed from May 18 through May 27, 1967, thus describing the largest magnetic disturbance recorded during the lifetime of this satellite. On May 25, 1967, auroral enhancements were measured corresponding to some 114 kilorayleighs or about 36 ergs cm−2 sec−1 of protons deposited in the atmosphere. For moderate magnetic disturbances, the auroral enhancements are found to correlate with the field variation at auroral latitudes such that a 100-γ variation would predict a 12-kR emission on the auroral oval near ±70°M.
