Considers the effect of long-range Coulomb interactions on the properties of a model quasi-one-dimensional conductor. Use of the bosonisation method allows the author to obtain an essentially exact solution of the problem. Most spectacularly, for g 1 >0(g 1 is the intrachain backward scattering constant) there is a metallic region in the phase diagram between the regions of density-wave and superconducting instabilities. In addition, the Coulomb interaction enhances the tendency towards density-wave ordering, whereas the superconducting fluctuations are suppressed. The implications of these results for current theories of (TMTSF) 2 X superconductors are discussed.
