Clinical issues regarding viral hepatitis in organ transplant recipients are complex, and vary depending on the organ transplanted and the serologic and virologic status of the donor and the recipient. A number of possible etiologies can lead to hepatitis or liver abnormalities in organ transplant patients. Of these, the most important infectious agents are hepatitis B and C, but other possible causes include CMV, HSV, HHV-6, EBV, adenovirus, and parvovirus B19, as well as noninfectious etiologies such as drug toxicity, alcohol abuse, and acute rejection in liver recipients.
