Identijication of Dynamic Zones in Batch FermentationsIn technical fermentation processes, it is important to identify the bpginning and end of productive regimes. The extent of the lag phase is particularly important. It is also important to identify the point a t which the growth rate reaches a maximum and entel's a period of decline.Conventional methods of plotting do not permit precise identification of these critical points.A very good example is offered by the growth of Candida lipolytica 4-1 on gas oil, as reported by Prokop and Erickson.1A typical experimental plot of cumulative alkali consumption, for the case of 22y0 (vol) dispersed phase is shown in Figure 1.Data of this type can be resolved into zones by a plotting technique which successfully isolates t,he influence of competing phenomena.A technique for this purpose has been developed by the present author.2.
